Description
The SoM-215GS is an ultra compact SoM Carrier/Base/Socket board, designed with the TI DP83640 IEEE 1588 PTP PHY onboard, with an optional 4.3 inch WQVGA (480 x 272) TFT color LCD and a resistive touch screen. The dimensions of the SoM-215 are 4.8″ by 3.0″, about the same dimensions as that of popular touch cell phones. The SoM-215 is small enough to fit in a 2U rack enclosure. This versatile SoM Carrier/Socket board is ideal for evaluation and early development work. This Carrier is designed to work with all EMAC 200-pin SODIMM type SoMs. Note: The SoM-215 is specifically designed for SoMs with Video & USB capability.
Standing above other SODIMM Carrier board options the SOM-215GS has a second Ethernet Phy ready for Precision Time Protocol (PTP) IEEE-1588 v1 and v2. The Texas Instruments TI DP83640 Real Time PHY offers many features to support Real time PTP networking as well as low latency time synchronization. To access this PHY the SOM-A5D36 is required. IEEE 1588 Standards are known as Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement Control Systems, or PTP for short. IEEE-1588 PTP protocol allows clocks distributed across a wired network to accurately synchronize time by distributing time stamped messages between nodes. This synchronizing decreases the latency jitter between master and slave PTP systems.
The SoM-215GS provides access to much of the SoM’s I/O through on-board connectors as well as a number of additional I/O expansion blocks such as Video, Touchscreen, Ethernet and micro SD flash disk. Full schematics of the SoM-215GS are provided giving the user a solid base with which to design their own SoM Carrier. Schematics of the SoM-215GS are available.
**Note: to use secondary PTP ethernet a SOM module with support for the PHY is required, Currently this is the SOM-A5D36

Although a good deal of customers will want a Carrier that is unique and is designed specifically for their application, the SoM-215GS when coupled with a SoM-A5D36 SODIMM SoM makes for a powerful User Interface Contol System with USB and Ethernet capabilities. This allows the user to gather data and respond with Control commands via the Internet.
When a unique custom board is required, the amount of design work required is greatly minimized by the SoM approach. The custom Carrier designer does not have to worry about the processor, memory, and standard I/O functions and can concentrate on the I/O, connectors and dimensional aspects required for the application.
In situations where a custom Carrier is required but the customer does not have the capability to design such a board in-house, EMAC’s Custom to Order Services (COS) can be utilized. Using COS the customer can select from a library of standard I/O blocks. These blocks can be put together quickly into a form-factor of the customer’s choosing, providing prototypes in as little as 30 days.

EMAC is a global leader in system on module and carrier board embedded systems. The System on Module (SoM) is an ideal alternative to custom engineering. With the SoM approach you get the best of aspects of both buying an Off-The-Shelf Embedded Single Board Computer (SBC) and a Custom Engineered solution. With Off-The-Shelf embedded components such as a generic carrier board and SOM module, it is possible to start development on your software applications before the custom carrier board is complete; thus offering a reduced time to market for your system. A System on Module (SoM) is comprised of a small processor module with CPU bus accessibility and standard I/O functionality. The SoM module does not have any connectorization and is designed to be plugged into a Carrier Board.
