A System on a module (SoM) also known as a Computer on Module(CoM) for x86 and RISC On Module(RoM) for ARM is an ideal alternative to custom engineering. With the SoM approach, you get the best of buying an Off-The-Shelf Single Board Computer (SBC) and a Custom Engineered solution. With Off-The-Shelf standard components such as a generic carrier board and SOM module, it is possible to start development on your software applications before the custom carrier board is complete; thus offering a reduced time to market for your system.

A System on Module (SoM), Computer on Module(CoM), or RISC On Module(RoM), is a small processor board built with a processor, memory, and hardware to start basic functions in the processor and provide standard I/O functionality. The SoM module does not have any connectorization and is designed to be plugged into a Carrier Board, (also known as a development board or Base board). The Carrier Board contains the I/O connectors as well any other I/O requirement not provided on the SoM itself. The SOM approach with a Computer on module offers a reduced risk of an End-of-life product due to a memory, flash, chipset, CPU or other components going end-of-life. With the ability to swap in another CPU SOM or Computer on Module board, the system can be running just as it was with no or minimal changes to the carrier board. This also offers scalability by offering a range of processor speeds and features in the same packages. These features offer scalability to allow a company to offer the same carrier board with multiple speed cores for similar products, allowing the economy of scale to bring down per-unit pricing.

  • The SoM-112ES is a compact, low-power SoM Carrier/Socket board with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity onboard, and MikroBUS expansion. This versatile SoM Carrier/Socket board is ideal for evaluation and early development work. This Carrier is designed to work with all EMAC 144-pin SODIMM type SoMs. Note: The SoM-112ES is specifically designed for SoMs with APM sleep capability and utilizes GPIO controllable IO to further reduce sleep current draws. The SoM-112ES provides access to much of the SoM's I/O through on-board connectors as well as a number of additional I/O expansion blocks such as Wireless Networking, Gigabit Ethernet, MikroBUS modules, and HCSD/MMC flash disk.

  • The SoM-150ES is versatile SoM Carrier/Socket board ideal for evaluation and early development work. This Carrier is designed to work with all EMAC 144-PIN SODIMM type SoMs. Note: The SoM-150 is specifically designed for SoMs with USB capability.  The SoM-150ES provides access to all the SoM's I/O through on-board connectors as well as a number of additional I/O expansion blocks such as A/D, D/A, Digital I/O, Audio CODEC, and MMC/SD flash disk. Although a good deal of customers will want a Carrier that is unique and is designed specifically for their application, the SoM-150ES when coupled with a 144-PIN SODIMM SoM makes for a powerful Remote Data Acquisition and Control system with USB and Ethernet capabilities. This allows the user to gather data and respond with Control commands via the Internet. An Enclosure and Power Supply will be available options for the SoM-150ES. When a unique custom board is required for an application, the amount of design work required is greatly minimized by the SoM approach. The custom Carrier designer does not have to worry about the processor, memory, and standard I/O functions and can concentrate on the I/O, connectors and dimensional aspects required for the application. In situations where a custom Carrier is required but the customer does not have the capability to design such a board in-house, EMAC's Custom to Order Services (COS) can be utilized (see Custom Carrier example on right). Using COS the customer can select from a library of standard I/O blocks. These blocks can be put together quickly into a form-factor of the customer's choosing, providing prototypes in as little as 30 days.
